Formative Work

My approach to drawing comes from being a musician and cellist. In response to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, I draw with both graphite stick and an eraser in rhythmic patterns, which I alternately lay over each other on a surface of Bristol board. As I move the graphite or eraser to the music, the solid lines and their ghostly erasures braid together – forging images in motion as their mixture grows in density and complexity. I monitor this rhythmic activity closely so as to stop the moment I see an emergent image breaking forth.
